Thank you for participating in this interview, I am very excited to talk with you!
Q: How long have you been a toy photographer?
A En: Since 2013… 7 years since the first shot on July 13th.
A Pt: Desde 2013… completo 7 anos desde o primeiro clique em 13 de julho.
Q: What got you started in toy photography?
A En: It was at a time when Instagram was a place where photographers found a way to explore other inspirations. I saw many photographers of landscapes, others of architecture, some of fashion and also of cuisine. At that time, I was also one of those photographers looking for something that had my “signature.” One day I was in my apartment, when I saw a sunset that looked like the ones at the end of a Pokémon episode. So I took a Pikachu (a fast food toy from McDonald’s) and put it on my porch rail and photographed it from behind, watching that colorful sky. I posted and to my surprise more people liked it. Then I started to mix my daily posts with toy pics. It was a very experimental period. The following year (2014) I really entered this world, making my first photographic series with a theme (Super Mario). This led me to meet other people who also photographed toys. And now we are here.
A Pt: Foi num momento em que o Instagram era um lugar onde fotógrafos encontravam uma forma de explorar outras inspirações. Eu via muitos fotógrafos de paisagens, outros de arquitetura, alguns de moda e também de culinária. Naquele momento eu também era um desses fotógrafos buscando algo que tivesse a minha “assinatura”. Um dia eu estava em meu apartamento, quando vi um pôr do sol que pareciam aqueles de final de episódio de Pokémon. Então peguei um Pikachu (um brinquedo de fast food, vindo do McDonald’s) e coloquei no parapeito da minha varanda e fotografei ele de costas, assistindo aquele céu colorido. Postei e para minha surpresa mais pessoas gostaram. Aí comecei a mesclar minhas postagens cotidianas com fotos de toys. Foi um período bem experimental. No ano seguinte (2014) que eu realmente entrei nesse mundo, fazendo minha primeira série fotográfica com um tema (Super Mario). Isso me levou a conhecer outras pessoas que também fotografavam toys. E agora estamos aqui.
Q: What is your favorite figure to shoot and why?
A En: I wouldn’t say it would be a single figure, but I really enjoy photographing Pokémon. For me, it’s a very big world of possibilities and in them I can find a way to recreate anime scenes, as well as express my feelings. In general… I think that is also part of photography, expressing feelings and being able to touch people with them.
A Pt: Não diria que seria uma única figura, mas me agrada muito fotografar Pokémon. Para mim, é um mundo muito vasto de possibilidades e neles eu encontro uma forma de recriar cenas do anime, bem como expressar meus sentimentos.
Q: What is your favorite place to take photos?
A En: Outdoors, for sure. I am looking forward to the end of the pandemic to walking around again photographing my figures.
A Pt: Ao ar livre, com certeza. Estou ansioso pelo fim da pandemia para voltar a andar por aí fotografando minhas figuras.
Q: What’s the weirdest thing that has ever happened during a photo shoot?
A En: Once I went into a lake that was a little dry to photograph a Totodile (Pokémon) and when I stepped on a certain point of it that I thought was solid land, I sank my right foot. Trying to escape, I ended up sinking the left too. Lucky that I wasn’t alone and they helped me out of that “swamp.” LOL Still, the photo worked, of course.
A Pt: Certa vez eu entrei em um lago que estava meio seco para fotografar um Totodile (Pokémon) e quando pisei em um certo ponto dele que pensava ser terra firme, eu afundei o pé direito. Tentando escapar, eu acabei afundando o esquerdo também. Sorte que eu não estava sozinho e me ajudaram a sair daquele “pântano”. LOL Mesmo assim a foto deu certo, lógico.
Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?
A En: Fly. No doubt.
A Pt: Voar. Sem dúvidas.
